A popular South Korean actor and singer has been found dead at his home after an apparent suicide, police said.

Park Yong-ha, 33, was reportedly found by his mother after apparently hanging himself with an electrical cord.

Police said Mr Park had been under pressure trying to manage his entertainment company and career while his father was battling cancer.

If confirmed, Mr Park would be the latest in a string of South Korean celebrities to take their own lives.

It follows the deaths of film star Choi Jin-sil in 2008 and Lee Eun-joo in 2005.

“I must be sick instead of you, father. I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” a police statement quoted Mr Park as saying before his death.

Mr Park also told acquaintances earlier in the week that his work was “difficult and this kind of life is so hard”, the report said.

Police said there was no suicide note but that they were not treating Mr Park’s death as suspicious. They said he had no history of depression.

Mr Park shot to fame for his role in the 2002 hit TV drama series Winter Sonata, during which he developed a following in Japan and other Asian countries.

He later released albums as a singer. He was scheduled to start filming in July for a Korean television drama called Comrades, Almost a Love Story – a remake of the popular 1996 Hong Kong film.

Fans around the world marked one year since the singer’s death

Pop star Michael Jackson’s father has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the doctor charged with giving him a lethal overdose one year ago.

The civil suit from Joe Jackson accuses Dr Conrad Murray of professional negligence in administering a fatal mix of sedatives to the singer.

The suit was filed as fans around the world marked the first anniversary of Jackson’s death at the age of 50.

Dr Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in his death.

Mr Jackson’s complaint seeks damages of more than $75,000 (£50,000) and alleges that Dr Murray was negligent in administering his son with the anaesthetic propofol and other drugs.

It also accuses him of secrecy and poor training and claims that Dr Murray’s clinics in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Houston, Texas, did not adequately supervise him.

Fans sing outside the Jackson family home

A spokeswoman for the doctor said she would not comment until his lawyers had reviewed the lawsuit.

The case will run parallel with the criminal trial against Dr Murray, which is expected to begin next year.

Dr Murray was treating Jackson as he prepared for a series of concerts in London.

As the suit was filed in a federal court in Los Angeles, fans of the singer around the world paid him tribute.

In New York, the Apollo Theatre – where Jackson and his brothers won a talent contest and were subsequently signed to Motown Records – fans recreated his famous dance moves and a letter from his mother Katherine was read out.

In his hometown of Gary, Indiana, his mother attended a memorial service outside the performer’s childhood home and unveiled a monument to him.

Other family members visited the Los Angeles cemetery where the musician is at rest and greeted some of the fans who had gathered outside.

Flowers were also left in tribute to the late star in Tokyo, where 50 fans spent the night in an exhibition of his possessions.

Meanwhile, prisoners in the Philippines were to mark the anniversary by staging a version of Thriller for invited members of the public on Saturday.

The inmates of Cebu jail became an internet phenomenon when they were filmed performing the dance in 2007.

Jackson has been named as the biggest selling artist in the UK since his death last year, with 4.3 million sales.

That exceeds his chart performance during his 1980s heyday, the Official Chart Company has said.

Carrie Underwood was the only artist to win two awards

Former American Idol star Carrie Underwood scooped two trophies at this year’s Country Music Television Awards.

The singer won video of the year for Cowboy Casanova and also performance of the year for Temporary Home.

Keith Urban took home the male video of the year award for ‘Til Summer Comes Around, while Miranda Lambert’s White Liar scooped best female video.

The awards, which took place in the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, were voted for by fans.

Collaborative video

Collecting one of her awards, Underwood addressed her “awesome fans”.

She said: “They were there before I had anything, an album, a record deal, a tour or anything like that. They built me from the ground up.”

Meanwhile, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now was named group video of the year, and duo video of the year went to Brooks and Dunn for Indian Summer, just two months before they perform together for the last time on their Last Roundup tour.

“We were not expecting this,” Brooks said. “So much that Mr Dunn has gone to the restroom – in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“I told you you should be here. I am not bringing this to you. You’re going to have to come and get it. This is the kind of thing that will make them think we’re going to break up the duo,” he joked.

The trophy for collaborative video of the year went to Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins for Hillbilly Bone, while Luke Bryan’s Do I was named weekend breakthrough video of the year.

Chris Brown was also sentenced to five years’ probation

US singer Chris Brown has been forced to postpone his UK tour after being denied a visa to enter the country, it has been confirmed.

Brown was refused permission on the grounds of being guilty of a serious criminal offence, the Home Office said.

He was sentenced to a community service order for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, last February.

The musician was due to play three UK concerts, starting in Glasgow on Wednesday night.

Two further dates in London, Birmingham and Manchester had also been planned, along with a concert Cork, the Irish Republic which has been shelved too.

Tour promoters SJM confirmed the concerts have been postponed “due to unforseen circumstances”.

They advised concert-goers to hold onto their tickets as there would be “possible re-arranged dates”.

Sony Music also confirmed that the singer’s tour has been postponed “due to issues surrounding his work visa”.

“Chris looks forward to performing for his fans abroad in the near future and thanks them for their continued support,” it added.

Brown had posted on his Twitter feed that he had been denied entry to the UK, but the entries were subsequently removed.

In a statement, the Home Office said: “We reserve the right to refuse entry to the UK to anyone guilty of a serious criminal offence. Public safety is one of our primary concerns.

“Each application to enter the UK is considered on its individual merits,” it added.
