How To Identify An Internet Troll

  1. Evaluate the intent of the comment. If you see a message that seems intentionally incendiary you may have a troll. Trolls seek attention by causing disruption in internet communities. Some common troll techniques may include:
    • Launch debates on inflammatory topics. The ideal topics will launch passionate posts on both sides of the debate. They will continue fanning the flames of the debate whenever they can.
    • Attack various members of the internet community.
    • Continually discuss nonsense subjects in the hope that other people join and interact with them.
    • Flooding, screaming, or otherwise disrupting chat channels.
  2. Check the profile and history of the possible troll. If they posted anonymously or they have a history of ridiculous comments, they are probably a troll.
  3. Ignore the troll. The best treatment for trolls is to ignore them. Trolls seek attention, when you reply to their incendiary statements, you are giving them the attention they seek. Do not feed the trolls by directly responding or arguing with them; attention is all they want. The more attention you give their posts, the worse they will get. When you ignore a troll, they will eventually go away and troll some other website on the internet.
